PENANG, May 13 (Bernama) -- A former state executive council (exco) member described Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's continued queries on the Penang Global City Centre (PGCC) project as mere play-acting.
Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan, the former Exco for Local Government, Traffic and Environment, said Lim was either playing politics or just ignorant of his responsibility as chief minister.
"I am shocked that Lim called a press conference just to ask some questions on PGCC. He could have asked his officers to explain but why use the media," he told reporters here Tuesday. Lim recently asked former chief minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon to explain the benefits of PGCC to Penang people and its ramifications.
Dr Teng said it was up to the Penang state government to approve the PGCC project or otherwise.
The RM25 billion project had been planned on a 104-hectare site on the island.
The project which includes five-star hotel and an international convention centre was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in September.
Dr Teng said the state government claim that Abdullah had been misled into believing that it had been approved was baseless as the approval concerned was only for the launch of the PGCC plan and not the project.
He added Abdullah was aware that the project had not been approved and that it was normal for the private sector to have a project plan launch.
"The launch was organised by the developer. The state government was invited as guests. The Prime Minister knew that the project had not been approved and had asked the developer to get state government help in approving the project," he added.
